DES PERES — Financial services giant Edward Jones is weighing a new “hub” in India for technology, data and operations roles, company officials said this week.

The company, in a statement Friday, didn’t specify its timeline for decision-making or where the hub in India could be located.

“Edward Jones is exploring the establishment of a hub in India, where we would directly employ associates supporting our technology, data, and operations work,” said a statement sent by spokesman Matthew Lara.

Client-facing work and branches will continue to be based in North America, the company said. Edward Jones’ home office locations include its headquarters in Des Peres, and campuses in Maryland Heights, Tempe, Arizona and an office in Ontario, Canada.

Edward Jones last year announced it had laid off 259 employees from its home office operation, which provides administrative, technology and human resources support to financial advisers in the field. The company said that in addition, 552 home office employees accepted a voluntary separation plan.

At the time, Edward Jones did not reveal how many St. Louis-area employees were affected by the cuts, but local employees were laid off, according to the company. An official said the reductions didn’t affect financial advisers and branch teams.

Edward Jones has been using contractors in India for digital and operations work as it reduces the size of its home office workforce in North America, InvestmentNews reported in March. The outlet reported Edward Jones started using India-based contractors in 2021, largely in the cities of Hyderabad and Bengaluru.

The effort outlined Friday is focused on transitioning duties from contractors to Edward Jones employees and building “on the success and talent we have developed in India over the past few years,” according to the company’s statement.

“We believe this approach will strengthen our capabilities, enable around-the-clock operations and allow access to key skills at scale — while preserving our culture, quality and security standards,” the company said.

In regulatory filings, Edward Jones said its home office headcount had fallen to 8,971 employees by the end of last year, down from 9,393 the year before.
