A St. Charles health care consulting firm has acquired a cloud-based software platform designed to help patients get access to prescription medications more quickly.

D2 Solutions didn’t disclose terms for its acquisition of Gainesville, Florida-based ProModRx, though the deal is expected to double the size of its workforce to between 45 and 55 employees, according to a spokeswoman for D2.

The acquisition allows D2 to expand its services for drug and medical device companies, pharmacies and health care providers, covering more steps in a patient’s experience, from starting a new prescription to staying on treatment, D2 said in a news release Thursday. Company officials said the move is aimed at reducing delays and confusion that often prevent patients from beginning or continuing therapy.

Research conducted by D2 highlights the scope of the challenge. The company found that 21% of adults delayed starting a prescribed medication because of confusion or access issues. Additional findings showed that 11% did not pick up their medication from the pharmacy, 12% skipped doses and 8% stopped treatment earlier than planned.

“D2’s focus has always been responding to market demands and the needs of our partners by helping address gaps in market access, operational support and patient services,” Dean Erhardt, founder and CEO of D2 Solutions, said in a news release. “The integration of ProModRx expands our ability to deliver the services and infrastructure our industry – and their patients – are asking for.”

Erhardt said the combined companies aim to make it easier for patients to begin treatment with fewer obstacles.

ProModRx’s technology is being added to D2’s UltraTouch Verify and UltraTouch Engage platforms. The tools are designed to help determine prescription coverage, support required approvals, and reach patients earlier with enrollment, onboarding and communication efforts. D2 said those services are intended to reduce delays once a medication is prescribed and to help patients stay engaged with their treatment over time.

The acquisition also broadens D2’s support for pharmacies, including retail, hospital, mail-order and specialty pharmacies, as well as drug and medical device manufacturers that rely on help coordinating access and reimbursement.

ProModRx employees will continue with the business following the acquisition, and General Manager Jerry Smith will join D2’s executive team. It will maintain its offices in Gainesville and Miramar, Florida.

Erhardt said the acquisition is part of D2’s larger strategy to better connect the steps patients face when starting treatment.
